Mee Property Acquisition

In February, 2024, the City of Edmonds acquired a one-acre property in Southeast Edmonds adjacent to Mathay Ballinger Park which will preserve existing open space and a well-established tree canopy, expand the only small park in the underserved southern area of Edmonds and support a trailhead for the regional Interurban trail.

Known as the Mee property, it has a flat, open lawn area that is bordered by more than 20 significant coniferous and deciduous trees, some being unique species including a sequoia of substantial size. The City intends to preserve these trees after acquisition. The site is relatively flat, gently sloping down from northwest to southeast. The property shares a 260-foot long property line with easy access to the adjacent existing Mathay Ballinger Park which has a playground, basketball courts and parking. This park is slated for $450,000 worth of improvements in 2024 including a permanent restroom and water fountain, paved path through the park connecting to the Interurban trail, picnic shelter, benches and picnic tables, amenities supporting a rare trailhead for the Interurban trail.

The negotiated purchase price of $925,000, plus related estimated costs of $212,500, are funded through a Snohomish County Conservation Future program grant ($853,125), the city’s Tree Fund ($200,000) and Real Estate Excise Tax (REET) ($84,375) sources. Related costs include appraisal, title report, due diligence, site survey, ESA Phase 1, site security and demolition.

The City will take possession of the property in late March, 2024 and the house and two out buildings will be secured and remain separated from Mathay Ballinger Park by fencing until structures are demolished and the property is open to the public.
