On the Fence: Temporary Public Art Installations

OtF sign

The City of Edmonds Arts Commission (EAC) seeks proposals for temporary outdoor art installations on two City owned chain link fences in downtown Edmonds. The goal is to feature creative ideas by regional artists and encourage community conversation through two exhibits on each fence per year.

This annual call to artists is now accepting proposals for exhibits scheduled during the following:

March - August 2022

September 2022 - February 2023

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

  • The installation should create visual interest for both pedestrians and vehicles
  • Artworks might reference, but are not restricted to themes of community, nature, sustainability, and history. Content must be deemed appropriate for diverse audiences and for public display in a community space.
  • The artist is responsible for creating the work and securing it to the fence by approved methods, taking into account variable weather and winds for a period of six (6) months. Materials must be appropriate for all weather conditions and not degrade or pollute during the exhibit period.
  • The usable portion of the fence measures 5' x 30-80' (depending on the site) and the artwork should utilize a minimum of 20 feet width.

The fence sites are:

  • The parking lot at Art Works, 201 2nd Ave S
  • The playfield fence east of the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St.

The City will prepare signage for the fence to identify the artist(s) and provide information about the work.

BUDGET:

The EAC provides an artist stipend of $1,000 per project for the 6-month exihibit.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A one-page proposal including a description of the theme of the work and why it is appropriate for Edmonds; information on the materials, including approximate weight, dimension, maintenance, safety, how materials will be attached to the fence and any environmental concerns; a rending or sketch of the proposed artwork showing dimensions as it will appear on the fence.
  • A cover lotter and resume with information on past exhibits and experience
  • Up to five (5) images of representative work.

Deadline for proposals is January 27, 2022. All proposals will be reviewed by the Edmonds Arts Commission at its February meeting. Artists will be notified if their proposal has been selected by February 9, 2022. Apply through EAC’s Submittable account: https://cityofedmondsartscommission.submittable.com/submit/210996/2022-on-the-fence-temporary-public-art-installations
