The watersheds of Western Washington are made up of large river systems, like the Snohomish and Stillaguamish Rivers in Snohomish County. These rivers start as small creeks in the Cascade Mountains and flow to Puget Sound, which then connects with the Pacific Ocean. Watersheds in the City of Edmonds are made up of small creeks, and instead of flowing to larger rivers drain either directly to Puget Sound or to Lake Ballinger (which flows to Lake Washington and then Puget Sound).
Many creeks in Edmonds flow in a combination of open stream channels and underground pipes. The underground pipes collect flows from storm drains located along paved streets and parking lots and connect them to downstream water bodies. Flows in some watersheds are contained in underground pipes for most of the way to Puget Sound or Lake Ballinger.
