Recruitment Process
The City of Edmonds is committed to attracting a diverse, productive, engaged, and talented workforce. The City accepts applications for open job postings only (which are posted on NEOGOV, the on line applicant tracking system).

For all represented (union) positions, the City of Edmonds will often use the full job description as the job posting which includes the classification specifications of the position. Reviewing the classification specification will provide you with general information about the position you applied for. You will gain an understanding of typical duties performed, the knowledge, abilities and skills you need to excel and the education, training and experience required for the position.

The City uses NEOGOV applicant tracking software for our application and job posting process.

Application Steps

For most positions, candidates will be required to participate in the following steps:

 

1. Create a candidate profile

Creating an online candidate profile on NEOGOV will allow you to:

- Apply for a position
- Upload your resume.
- Complete job specific pre-screening questions

The process is quick and simple and allows you to update your profile at any time so your information is the most up to date.

2. Apply for an opportunity

Using a candidate profile, applicants may search for jobs and apply for available positions online. For some positions, a cover letter and resume attachment as well as completing a supplemental questionnaire is mandatory. Ensure you have a cover letter and resume available before applying to a job posting.

3. Assessment and interview process

Candidates whose qualifications and experience meet the job requirements may be contacted for an interview. Only candidates being considered for the position will be contacted.

The interview will be an opportunity for the candidate to learn more about the position and for the interviewers to learn more about the candidate’s skills, experiences and past performance. The City generally uses panel style interviews (with 3-4 panel member) and there are often 2 rounds of interviews (the second round may be to meet the department head). For many non-supervisory positions, as the courtesy, the applicants are asked to arrive 15 minutes early for their interview time so that they may be able to review the interview questions and job posting again prior to the interview.

On average, the recruitment/selection process takes about 4 –8 weeks from the time the posting closes. Throughout the process candidates may log onto their online account and check their application status. If a position is reposted due to a lack of qualified applicants in the applicant pool, the City will repost the position on our website.

Once interviews have been completed, reference checks/background checks and/or drug and alcohol testing (for certain positions) will be conducted for the top candidate or candidates. Current and previous supervisors are contacted for character reference checks and mandatory questions about job performance, discipline and dismissal will be asked in all reference checks.

4. Job Offer

Once all the assessments, interviews and reference checks for a position are complete, the successful candidate will be contacted with a verbal offer to be followed up in writing.  Sometimes the job offers are made, contingent upon the successful completion of the background and/or any pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. Please note that applicants are not notified about non-selection (for an interview or for the position) until the selection process has been completed. Unsuccessful candidates will be sent regret notification via email or post mail.

What if I Don’t Apply Online?


If you apply for a City job by an alternate method other than our online recruiting system (such as a hard-copy application form), you must provide the following three documents:

  • Your resume/ application
  • Answers to screening questions/supplemental questionnaire related to the position 
  • A signed Acknowledgement Statement
Once you submit your resume, screening questions and an Acknowledgement Statement will be forwarded to you for completion. Although you can apply through other methods, you are encouraged to apply online so that these required documents can be completed immediately.
